Dry Eye Treatments

At Silver Lake Eye Care Center, we are proud to offer specialized dry eye treatments. Dry eye disease can have a major impact on your quality of life. You may find that your eyes get tired faster, or you may have difficulty reading for a long period of time. Symptoms of dry eyes include blurred vision, fluctuating vision, redness, burning or stinging, excessive watering, gritty or foreign body sensation, and contact lens discomfort.

What is Dry Eye Disease?

Dry eye disease affects hundreds of millions of people throughout the world, and is one of the more frequent causes of patient visits to eye care providers. Dry eye disease is complex, and is characterized by a vicious cycle of tear film instability and hyperosmolarity, which leads to increased ocular surface inflammation, damage, and neurosensory abnormalities. If left untreated, dry eye disease can impair your vision, damage your tissues, scar your corneas, and increase your risk for infection over time. Furthermore, dry eye disease often leads to contact lens intolerance, and is associated with worse surgical outcomes. Early intervention and early treatment is key for success.

Risk Factors?

The signs and symptoms of dry eye disease increase with age. However, dry eye disease is multifactorial, it is also associated with:

  • Computer use and digital devices

  • Contact lens use

  • Autoimmune/Inflammatory health conditions (such as: Arthritis, Sjogren Syndrome, Lupus)

  • Thyroid conditions

  • Diabetes Mellitus

  • Rosacea

  • Certain medications (such as diuretics, anti-histamines, isotretinoin, antidepressants)

  • Hormone imbalance

  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea

  • Environmental conditions (such as exposure to smoke, wind, and dry climates)

  • Eye surgeries (such as LASIK/PRK, Cataract surgery, RLE, ICL)

Diagnosis

At Silver Lake Eye Care Center, we take a thorough and in-depth approach to accurately diagnose the condition, and identify the root cause of dry eye and ocular surface disease. Our assessment includes a tear film analysis and highly advanced diagnostic imaging, which allows us to see the structure and function of the oil glands within your eyelids. Additionally, we take measurements or images of any signs of ocular surface inflammation or damage. Our team of expert Doctors will develop a customized treatment plan, tailored to you. Early intervention and treatment is the key to success.

Treatments

Based on your evaluation, your Doctor will work with you to develop the best possible treatment plan, tailored to your eyes.

At Silver Lake Eye Care Center, we are proud to offer innovative and advanced in-office procedures to target the root cause of dry eye and inflammation. These solutions are non-invasive, non-surgical, and allow us to treat the issue without the need for medications or eye drops.

  • Forma-I Radiofrequency: A small applicator delivers thermal energy to the eye area, which targets meibomian gland blockages, and promotes improved blood circulation and gland function.

  • Lumecca Intense Pulsed Light: Uses light energy to target abnormal inflammatory blood vessels along the eyelid margin and face. The IPL energy shrinks and closes off these abnormal blood vessels, which greatly reduces inflammation.

  • Prokera Amniotic Membrane: A biological corneal bandage designed to promote healing. It is filled with natural anti-inflammatories and anti-scarring properties.

  • ZEST: An in-office cleaning procedure done to reduce the build-up of biofilm, bacteria, mites, debris, along the eyelids and lashes.

  • Autologous Serum Eyedrops: Derived from your own blood draw. Serum is composed of a complex mixture of growth factors, proteins, antioxidants and lipids, which mimics the components of human tears and promotes healing.

  • Punctal Plugs: Designed for certain forms of dry eye. These microscopic plugs are inserted into your tear ducts to retain surface moisture.

  • Prescription Eye Drops: Anti-inflammatory and immune-suppressing medications to control ocular inflammation.
